Welcome to Cindy’s Metro!
Hi! And welcome to my cute little car’s website! Isn’t it just adorable?……the car! Not the website!
Anyway, here you can learn all about my 1957 Nash Metropolitan, and how I got it. The story and more is down below!
Me in a Metro look-a-like in Universal Studios…close, but not close enough!
My Met Story
Let’s turn back time a bit. Boy, wouldn’t that be great… because more time to drive would be fantastic!
It was 1992 and I had packed my bags, grabbed my two children, and headed to the airport to visit my Mom and Dad who lived in Florida. While visiting My folks one night, we all thought it would be fun to bring the kids to the Rainforest Café…and as simple as it sounds, that’s how the love affair started…
Just around the corner from the jungle that was the Rainforest Cafe, was Levi’s shop that had an absolutely unforgettable front display. Two mannequins, dressed in Levi’s of course were perched atop the back of the cutest car I had ever seen! It was an immaculate, turquoise and white, convertible that shone from every angle. Even better was the fact that it was completely filled to the brim with jeans!
I had to know what kind of car it was, and after asking the store, found out that it was a 1957 Metropolitan. My birth year! I knew then it was meant to be, and that one day I’d track one down for myself.
Gifts from friends…a model Metro…How can we make this 200x bigger?
The Hunt Begins
Year after year, all I could think was “How can I get my hands on a Metropolitan?” I was always looking in books and magazines any time I was in a bookstore. Sometimes I’d be calling all over the country and long-distance, when there was long distance of course! Discussions with sooooo many people on how good or, more often, how bad the cars were.
Did I really dare to take this on? Keep in mind I was not the right person to take on a restoration of a special car like the Metropolitan. Where was Google back then?
Chatting with owners here in Louisville, Kentucky at July 4th Celebrations. I actually did get a chance, and offered to buy a Metro at an Event, sadly with no success. Darn. However, I did get the business card and pamphlet from The Derby City Metropolitan Club, which is no longer in existence. Where are you Don Trail!? I have held on to your information for 25 plus years!
So many of my friends have heard about the love affair that wasn’t happening. They filled my wishes with posters, caricatures, and models Of the car. And then…
A once in a lifetime chance…The Elkhart Auction.
The Perfect Opportunity
Finally! I’ve found the perfect chance to snag a once in a lifetime car…The Elkhart Auction. It’s turquoise and white, and a 1957! It might not be a convertible, but it’s still too perfect to pass up.
I waited for the auction with baited breath…and the worst part, is that I couldn’t even go! Me and my family were at home, watching on a livestream with fingers crossed. I was on the phone with a Sotheby’s representative, making sure not to bid too early. I didn’t want to drive the price up early. There was a slight pause as the auction started to slow, and I jumped in! There was some back and forth with one other bidder…it was just us two, but I wasn’t going to give up. This Metro is gonna be mine!…and now it’s official!
It arrives!
Finally Mine
November 1st she arrived. Just. So cute. It’s breathtaking how pretty and clean it is. However, there’s some bad news…it’s nonfunctioning! The fun begins.
There’s a brochure on the front seat with a business card. I take a look, and I called immediately. Brad Swigart was the man on the other line, and he was so kind and informative and looked forward to my joining the club. We chatted and he shared the history of my new car. What a joy to know the who, what, and where of the car.
This was fantastic! An opportunity to chat with a former owner of my car was exactly what I needed. He shared what a special car I had, and to treat her well. That, I can guarantee I am doing. Now keep in mind that this car was kept clean by the owner after Mark, however, however, it wasn’t really given the mechanical treatment that it needed. She was held captive in a garage, and in great company with approximately 350 other cars. All gorgeous too! But, now she is free!
Nolan’s first time in the Metro!
New Friends
I have to say this car is just fantastic, but not as fantastic as meeting some of the most top-notch Members of the Metropolitan Club, who are now great friends of mine. So many phone calls to Chuck Durant and Ed Bausher with the Hoosier Mets. Hours of conversations of what to do to get her working. I can’t thank Ed enough for his hands on experience and his hands on my car. If it wasn’t for Ed taking precious time to check my car out, bring parts over to the shop where she was being worked on, and adopting her to correct issues that were not addressed, I would not be driving her now. And when they say behind every great man there is a greater woman. They are correct! That would be Vicky Bausher. I am so thrilled to meet such nice folks with the same interest in our cars. Vicky and Ed have the Sister to my car : )
Out and About
Well, I have written way too much and could go on forever…….but won’t. I’ve got driving to do, and I hope you are reading this because you saw me putting around town! Be sure to wave!
And one last BIG THANK YOU to everyone I have “MET” so far and I look forward to meeting many more down the road!
